I think the payment mechanism is a surmountable problem. I think Nii is right to ask how to adapt the model culturally. "Crowdfunding" has existed here since time immemorial with savings clubs and other mutual assistance groups. The question is how to create virtuous links between online and offline activities.

Raquel, you have a point with the payment mechanism. It might also take some time for people to get comfortable with contributing financially towards a project online. At the risk of stereotyping, we are a people who prefere the "face to face" type of dealing with other people be they customers or people looking for funding online for their projects. But, yes, the biggest draw back here i feel will be the lack of a "paypal" type payment system that is trusted. Mind you with what the like of M=Pesa are getting up to, it won't surprise me at all if the African equivalent of paypal came on stream sooner rather than later :)

There are other sources for charcoal than wood, and Nigeria has them plentifully. Aquatic weeds (Typha and water hyacinth) clog your waters. Both can be readily made into charcoal with a high ash content. There are MANY benefits to be had from their clearance. Collect them at a profit! See what happens to your Quelea problem, your malaria problem, your water supply.

I was searching for Herds of The Fathers and I came across your blog, I didn't know if you were familiar with African/African Americans throughout the diaspora who are also designers. I agree with you there are alot of traditional African designers but we have to start a movement of our own. Check out Street Etiquette which I know your familiar with or Brooklyn Circus all ran by brothers or Junk Prints which is ran by a sister out of NYC.
