Banana Briquettes

The BBC reports on Joel Chaney's work with Banana peels:
He came up with the idea of developing a low-tech approach to turn this banana waste into an efficient fuel source...He first mashes a pile of rotting skins and leaves. Africa is the mother of Invention. I believe too in looking around, seeing "what goods you've got" and making the best use of them. For me - I saw flour, sugar and a host of raw ingredients indigenous to South Africa like Rooibos Tea know for its antioxidant properties. From there I was able to form my idea to help Create Opportunity One Bite at a Time and Founded The Khaya Cookie Company.

I am the Founder of the Khaya Cookie Company (khayacookies.com) located in South Africa. Today we successfully export our gourmet cookies to the United States where they have been featured on Rachael Ray (Rachaelray.com) and won Food Network’s Edible Entreprenuer of the Year Award. Khaya (or ‘home’ in Xhosa) was founded on the belief that job creation, skills training and an inspiring work
environment are among the most self-sustaining gifts one can give. That’s why our uniquely flavored, healthy gourmet shortbreads and granolas help create jobs for previously unemployed women and men in South Africa. We foster opportunity and the chance to lead more fulfilling lives.

I am inspired by this story. We sometimes need to just look around and make use of what is in front of our eyes.

Best,
Alicia
