Merkato 55

Bloomberg reports on the advent of Marcus Samuelsson's new restaurant-Merkato 55.
Now 36, the chef is furthering his vision via Merkato, an African-inspired restaurant he's opening in Manhattan's Meatpacking District in September... The restaurant is named for the open-air market in Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa.
``I love going there,'' Samuelsson says of the labyrinthine marketplace. ``Everything happens there. It's the meat market meets the spice market, the fruit market, the wine market. We drink honey wine, we all eat together.''
Samuelsson hopes Merkato will do for African cuisine what Aquavit did for the food of Scandinavia.

I always wonder why African restaurants have never taken off, in the West. We see Chinese and Indian food everywhere. But not African. Nice to see this breakthrough.

Ethiopia is the one African country that has made strong inroads in the restaurant business in London and many other European cities......also serving a diverse clientèle...not just Ethiopians.
