Informal Industrial Clusters

Nigeria's southeastern town of Nnewi and Ghana's Suame Magazine in Kumasi are two clear examples of successful bottom up indigenous industrialization. Studies related to Nnewi by Deborah Brautigam such as "Substituting for the State: Institutions and Industrial Development in Eastern Nigeria" and "Local Entrepreneurship in Southeast Asia and Subsaharan Africa:Networks and Linkages to the Global Economy" Along with the piece by Banji Oyelaren-Oyeyinka on "Networks and linkages in African manufacturing cluster : a Nigerian case study" illustrate the reasons why. George Yaw Obeng's paper on Suame Magazine states that "if the appropriate growth poles are put in place the potential and the dynamism of the micro-scale engineering enterprises (MSEs) of Suame will be greatly felt in the economy of Ghana". Lynn Mytelka & Fulvia Farinelli study on "Local Clusters, Innovation Systems and Sustained competitiveness" concludes that amongst other things "..traditional sectors thus remain potential platforms for catching up by developing countries.."
